MCP- 225 Years Young

The Partners and Staff of MCP are this year celebrating the 225th year of the firm's foundation. We have been in continuous practice since 1784. The firm was established by a leading legal luminary Charles Metcalfe at Wisbech and we remain in the offices where it all started in that town.

MCP now practices from offices in Wisbech, Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Thetford. The firm has grown substantially over the years and expanded both its range and area of practice. However we like to remain faithful to the old traditions and values of a long established firm. MCP places a very high value on client service, 96% of our clients rate our service as "excellent" or "very good". Nearly 70% of our new business comes from established clients.

Our staff tend to work with the firm for many years. We are proud to maintain a tradition of training new lawyers and allowing them to develop their careers. Mindful of our roots we continue to service local clients and we are proud that we continue to work within the Legal Aid System. Protecting the liberty of citizens, ensuring access to the law are fundamental to a law abiding society, particularly at a time when the state presses ever further into our lives. Most local firms have turned their back on this part of the legal service but we will not do so.

Having started as a small firm we are pleased that there are now over 100 people working with MCP and with over 40 lawyers we are one of the larger local practices.

It is worth remembering at this time that MCP was in business 21 years before Nelson defeated the French at Trafalgar, 48 years before the Great Reform Act extended voting rights to most men, 117 years before Queeen Victoria died and 134 years before the First World War ended. That said it was only 21 years ago that the son of George Pettefar (the "Pettefar" in the firm's name) retired.

We are undertaking a myriad of activitives to mark this milestone anniversary. Amongst those with the help, support and encouragement of all in the firm we hope to benefit a number of local charities. We will be showing some historical artefacts, organising balloon races, having dress down days and hopefully dressing oursleves in some of the period costume appropriate to the year of the firm's foundation.
