MCP Solicitors was established in 1784 and has been in continuous practice ever since. MCP Solicitors has five offices in four different towns, King's Lynn, Peterborough, Thetford and Wisbech. Each office aims to offer the full range of High Street provincial law service.
In addition MCP Solicitors operates through specialist business teams, a second tier giving more specialist service, particularly in the areas of Regulatory Law, Tax Planning, Employment and Commercial Law. MCP Solicitors' client base is both local and national. The former category includes local families with whom we have been connected for decades, the latter includes national publicly quoted businesses including W H Smith, Wyevale Garden Centres & Somerfield Stores.
MCP Solicitors is committed to publicly funded work despite the privations of Governments and the administrative bureaucracy imposed. The consequence of this is that there is inevitably an element of cross subsidy by some of the more lucrative work. The Partnership accepts that obligation, believing it is the price of our service to the people of King's Lynn, Peterborough, Thetford and Wisbech. The Partners do not expect to have their livings made for them by non-Partner colleagues.
MCP Solicitors endeavors to operate an open door practice. We operate a debt free balance sheet and historically provide in advance for known liabilities such as tax and professional indemnity etc. At any one time we hope to have these liabilities provided for at least six months in advance and it is our proud boast that whilst carrying some £12m worth of indemnity cover we pay the premiums in one lump sum from our own resources.
MCP Solicitors believes that our breadth of practice allows our lawyers to enjoy a good measure of career development. We encourage practice changes and development. We are happy that many lawyers remain with us for long periods of time and in particular that most of the Partnership have a very long association with the firm.
It is a proud professional boast that in 1992 MCP Solicitors had more cases in the European Court of Justice than any other law firm in the European Union. Equally we find ourselves in local courts on a regular basis to obtain injunctions on behalf of women and children facing the threat of violence. We aim to work hard to serve our clients well and to be reasonably rewarded. We look for long term security in the business and those involved in it.
All of the offices that we presently occupy in King's Lynn, Peterborough, Thetford and Wisbech are owned by companies the shares of which are in turn owned within the Partnership. This gives MCP Solicitors a degree of security and comfort which we believe is appreciated by our lawyers.
The Partnership consists of 8 Equity and 6 Salaried Partners. All Equity Partners are equal in their capital contribution and their profit share. There are no bars to admission to the Partnership and several of our Partners trained with the firm. We have a further listed 23 lawyers but expect and regard all of those working in the practice to contribute to its welfare. Most members of MCP Solicitors work full time (some significantly longer!) but we do have part time lawyers and support staff. That is something that subject to the needs of the business will always be considered.
